Leather Jackets: Rebels without a Cause
Film buffs will know that a leather jacket wearer in a movie is someone you do not want to mess with. Think Christian Slater in Heathers, Nicolas Cage in Gone in 60 Seconds, Brad Pitt in Fight Club and everyone's favourite adventurer, Indiana Jones. These guys are the epitome of cool and their character was built around their signature jackets. To go even further back in time, conjure the image of Marlon Brando in Easy Rider, or even James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause. Of course it is not just the men who are known for their rebellious leather jacket wearing ways. Honor Blackman's character in The Avengers was known for her slinky fitted jacket and of course Olivia Newton John going for zero to hero in that funfair scene in Grease.
The music scene has also been dominated by leather jacket wearing rock stars. The Ramones were photographed time and time again wearing their standard stage uniform of long hair, moody attitudes and of course leather jackets. Indie bands have also adopted this style and you need only put on the music channels to find the common combination of leather jacket and guitar. Although the standard black leather jacket has been the main colour of choice, there are plenty of other styles and designs that are starting to emerge out of the depths of pop culture. Stars such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga have both been spotted wearing jackets decorated with studs and spikes, opening doors to a bunch of high street copies that fans have eagerly snapped up. Leather trousers have also made a comeback over the last few months, with more and more celebrities pouring themselves into the figure hugging pants.
The next time you slip on your favourite leather jacket or walk past a store and wonder if you can pull off this edgy look, think about all of the heroes and icons to have thoroughly rocked this timeless trend!
