    • 1). Measure out the overall size of the fireplace you want in a spot you've selected in your outdoor space, using a tape measure. Scratch the corner marks into the dirt with the corner of a shovel.

    • 2). Dig out the overall footprint of the fireplace down to a depth of 8 inches, using a shovel. Fill the first 2 inches with sand. Fill in the remaining depth of the hole with gravel.

    • 3). Compact the gravel with a plate compactor so that it creates a level base for the fireplace. The gravel should be level with the ground surrounding it.

    • 4). Lay a base layer of bricks along the sides and back of the fireplace base. The bricks should be butted up end to end with the widest side laying flat. Place a level across the base layer of bricks and adjust for level by tapping the bricks with a rubber mallet.

    • 5). Apply additional layers of bricks to the base layer. Stagger the joints below so that they fall halfway between the brick above by starting every other layer with a half brick. Spread a layer of mortar on the bottom of each brick with a trowel as you lay it in place.

    • 6). Lay the final layer of bricks once you have reached the desired height. Go around each joint and tool the mortar with a brick jointer. The jointer makes a smooth mortar connection along the joints.

    • 7). Place the cast-iron fireplace insert in the opening of the fireplace. This will allow you to cook at different heights over the fireplace. Allow the brick fireplace to cure for five to seven days prior to using it.
