How to Screenprint on Silk Clothing

    Prepare the Screen

    • 1). Cut a sheet of contact paper large enough to cover the entire flat side of the screen. Draw your image in the center of the paper side of the contact paper. Using a craft knife, carefully cut out the image. Keep in mind that the cutout parts will be the parts that receive ink. If your image has "islands" (small pieces that aren't attached), be sure to save them and remember where in the image they will go.

    • 2). Peel the adhesive plastic of the contact paper away from the backing, working slowly and carefully. Stick the plastic to the flat side of the screen, working from one end toward the other and smoothing out any bubbles. Be sure that all your cutout areas are positioned straight and smooth. If you had any islands in Step 1, stick those to their appropriate areas, aligning them with the main image.

    • 3). Check that your squeegee is wider than the image you cut into the plastic. If it is too narrow, you will have blank spots on the edges of your image.

    Prepare the Table

    • 1). Spread out one towel on the table, smoothing out any wrinkles. Stack the other three towels on top of the first one, creating a padded surface. Use the C-clamps to secure the towels to the table. If your table is too large, you can use heavy paperweights.

    • 2). Lay your item of silk clothing on the prepared towels. Smooth out any wrinkles and straighten the seams. Place a sheet of thick paper inside the garment underneath the area you wish to print, separating the front and back layers. This will ensure that no ink bleeds through to the other side. If your paper is thin, you may want to use several sheets. Secure the garment to the towels using T-pins, safety pins or straight pins.

    • 3). Cover your towels with sheets of paper or scrap fabric to avoid dripping ink on them.

    Make the Print

    • 1). Lay your screen on the garment, centering the image over the area you wish to print. Use the spatula to place ink inside the edge of the screen furthest from you and spread the ink across the entire top edge. This will ensure that your print does not have streaks or blank spots.

    • 2). Set the rubber edge of the squeegee along the top inner edge of the screen, above the ink. Pressing down firmly, pull the squeegee straight back toward you in one motion. Examine the screen. If you see blank spots, streaks or any other imperfections in the image, place the squeegee back at the top of the screen and pull again. Avoid doing this more than twice as the image may bleed.

    • 3). Remove the screen carefully from the surface of the garment, pulling it straight up to avoid smudging. Let the garment dry to the touch before moving. This may take several hours. When the print looks dry, preheat your iron to the silk setting.

    • 4). Unpin the garment from the towels and remove the paper from inside. Transfer the garment to an ironing board. Place a sheet of aluminum foil inside the garment, beneath the print. Place a sheet of paper on top of the print. Moving in slow circles, iron the paper for 15 to 25 seconds. This will set the print and prevent it from washing out.
