How to Add Fractions the Simple Way
- 1). Write out the two fractions which are to be added. As an example, the fractions 2/3 and 4/7 will be added together.
- 2). Write out the expression [(a)(d) + (b)(c)]/(b)(d), considering the first fraction as a/b and the second as c/d, and perform the multiplications and additions in that expression to give a new fraction. In the example, the 2/3 would be a/b and 4/7 would be c/d, so the expression would be [(2)(7) + (4)(3)]/(3)(7) or 26/21.
- 3). Rewrite the fraction in a different form if required depending on how you want to present the final answer. In the case of the example, you may prefer to revise the fraction 26/21 to 1 and 5/21 or use a calculator to compute the equivalent decimal value of 1.238. Because this technique does not always give the smallest possible denominator, you may end up with a fraction that can be simplified to a form thatcontains smaller numbers. A final answer of 12/24, for instance, could instead be written as 1/2.
