An Online Tour of the Cathedral

    • Use your computer and take your children on an online tour of St. Peter's Basilica (see Resources). St. Peter's Basilica is a late Renaissance church located within the Vatican City which is the burial place of St. Peter. Navigate to the Cathedra Petri page (see Resources) to see images of the monument that was created to enclose the wooden throne of St. Peter. Use this virtual tour to share information and history on the holiday with your children.

    Read a Story

    • Trying to teach a child about St. Peter's tomb and the Vatican is never an easy job but there are some stories out there specifically aimed at children, such as "Lost in Peter's Tomb" by Dianne Ahern (see Resources). This book is a mystery novel aimed at kids that also includes a lot of facts and figures about the topic of St. Peter. So read the book to your children as they are tucked up in bed and they will enjoy a mystery story while learning more about this holiday and St. Peter himself.

    Stained Glass Window

    • For an interactive activity, make the stained glass window that is above St. Peter's chair in the Cathedra Petri. In the Cathedral, the alabaster window shows the Holy Spirit as a dove. To make this, print out a circular image of the center picture in the stained glass window (see Resources). Stick this onto clear contact paper. Cut orange, yellow and peach tissue paper into small squares and stick these around the image. Finish the activity off by placing black construction paper around the contact paper edges to create a border. Stick it to a window so that the light will shine through.

    Edible Chairs

    • Another fun activity is to create an edible chair of St. Peter. Cut a PopTart or other toaster pastry in half, making sure one side is bigger than the other. The longer side will be the back of the chair. Melt some white chocolate and use this to stick the longer end of the pastry on top of the shorter side. Cut two long, rolled wafers into eight even sections. These will be the legs and arms of the chair. Attach the arms and legs using more melted chocolate.
