How to Protect Jewelry

If you do not like to take off your jewelry, then make sure that you wear rubber gloves to protect it from harsh cleaning agents

Remove jewelry before housework. Many cleaning agents contain harsh chemicals that can discolor diamonds and even eat away at artificial or enhanced gemstones. Remove all of your rings and bracelets before beginning your housework in order to keep such agents away from your prized posessions.

    • 2). Clean with care. Depending on the type of stone and setting, you may be able to clean your jewelry at home with soap and water or with an inexpensive jewelry cleaner purchased at the drug store. However, some types of treated, enhanced and even naturally occurring stones can be damaged by excessive brushing and typical jewelry-cleaning concoctions, so check with a jeweler to find out what kind of cleaning will be best for the life of your piece.

    • 3). Insure pieces individually. Many people mistakenly think that their homeowner's insurance policy will automatically cover loss of, theft or damage to valued jewelry. However, if this jewelry is not itemized on the policy and if you cannot prove that the incident occurred without a doubt within the confines of your home, then the policy will not pay. If you value your jewelry enough to insure it, then insure it on a separate policy that covers all possible problems with the piece itself.

Gems that have been treated for deeper color or brighter sparkle may not respond well to repairs conducted under high heat, so make sure that your jeweler is aware of any treatments that your jewelry may have been subjected to in the past

Get a certified opinion on value and care. Work with a jeweler to decide exactly how to care for your jewelry. It may make sense to pay a fee to a jeweler who did not sell you the piece and find out exactly what to do to keep the jewelry looking fabulous. The vendor of the item may mislead you because they do not wish to disclose enhancements or other potential negative care issues with a gem or setting, so getting an independent, objective opinion is best for the safety of your jewelry.

    • 5). Place pieces in the same place every time you remove them. This will help you keep track of your jewelry and not lose it due to simple memory loss. Do not keep jewelry near sinks or drains, as a single awkward moment can send your treasures into the sewer forever.
