      5. Are you willing to work or complete work training if you are not disabled?

    • 2). If you think you qualify, or if you're not sure, the next step is to turn in an application for SNAP food stamps (SNAP). You can download an application to print at the link in the resources section below.

If you are unable to print an application, you can also go to or call your local Alabama HHSC office and request that one be sent to you. You can find a list of the Alabama HHSC offices in the resources section below.

If you need help filling out a SNAP food stamp application, you'll need to either visit your local DHR benefits office or you can simply dial 2-1-1 on your telephone to reach someone who can help you. This line is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

    • 4). If you are given an appointment you will need to bring in documentation of your household and it's financial situation. You will be told what to bring, but generally it includes: your ID, social security numbers for yourself and your household members, proof of income, proof of rent and bills, proof of child support payment withdrawals, child care receipts, etc.

Be sure to be on time to your appointment and be nice! This is where the final decision about whether or not you will receive SNAP food stamps will be made.

    • 5). If you are accepted into SNAP, you will receive an electronic benefits card (EBT). It works like a debit card. On the day of the month you get your food stamp benefits, the money will be deposited onto this card. This card can then be used at any grocery store (in the country) that accepts EBT cards. Note, however, that you cannot withdraw cash from this card nor can you buy toilet paper or other non-food items with it. It is for food only.
