Acne Treatment That Works
- Most commercially produced soaps contain chemical ingredients that can be extremely harsh to the skin. Many soaps dry the skin, encouraging excess oil production that leads to acne. It is important to use only a soap formulated for sensitive skin, as it will not contain damaging ingredients. To further reduce acne eruptions, treat the skin as gently as possible. Use a light touch, avoiding scrubbing or rubbing.
- Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective acne treatments, but people who use the highest strength available are making a mistake. The skin can't handle benzoyl peroxide concentrations higher than 2.5% and can become red, inflamed, and burned. Apply a nickel-sized amount of the the lower-strength cream, smoothing it onto the skin delicately. Let the cream absorb before applying other products.
- All benzoyl peroxide creams can be drying, even the lowest-strength cream. To prevent irritation, apply an oil-free lotion after the benzoyl peroxide cream is absorbed. Selecting an oil-free variety will ensure that the skin does not become clogged with the oils included in most regular lotions. Use a dime-sized amount, and spread the lotion onto the skin gently, using only the fingertips to massage it in. Let the lotion absorb into the skin, wiping away excess oil with a soft washcloth or tissue.
