Safe driving is something that you can actually learn and master. You can go the same way by which other drivers go or you can try to be different and you can learn techniques by which you can master the science of staying away from accidents.

Other people might say that accidents will happen no matter what you do. That may be true but it is more likely to happen if you don't pay attention to what you're doing.

Here are some techniques that you should know about:

Don't Be Part of the Pack- When you stand at an overpass and you look down on the passing vehicles, you would see a pattern in driver behavior. You would see that they tend to bunch up in packs. That can be a dangerous practice because it reduces your room for maneuvering.

What you need to do is stay away from those groups and keep your distance. You should not just tailgate someone but you should also avoid someone following you too closely or having a vehicle flanking you.

Lights Are Not Just When Its Dark- One cause of traffic accidents is because drivers fail to see other vehicles. You should therefore help them notice you. The best way that you can do that is by keeping your lights open.

You should start using your lights even when it is just starting to get dark or when it is still too early. Better you can just leave your lights on all the time. That might sound like a waste of electricity but just think of how other drivers are sure to notice you.

Look Around You- Drivers get a tendency to develop a hypnotic stare in front of the road. When that happens they get a reduced awareness of what is going on to the side or to the rear of their vehicle as they move which increases the likelihood that there will be an accident.

You can prevent an accident from happening by constantly moving your eyes around. You should look at the front and at the sides constantly and never letting your eyes rest on a single area for too long.

Going Slow Can Be a Problem- If you're the type of person who thinks that going slow can keep you safe then think again. On a freeway going slower than average carries some risk to it. You should aim to go at the same speed that other vehicles are going.

Never Stop at Freeways- Avoid making sudden stops on freeways. If you made a turn at the wrong exit, then you should not stop your vehicle on the ramp and figure out what to do. The vehicle behind you is more likely to hit you rear because of that.

Mind the Weather- Weather conditions can affect the way that you drive and you should respect that. That's why you should see to it that you drive more carefully when there is reduced visibility because of bad weather conditions.

These are just some of the things that you should keep in mind to stay safe on the road.
