Henry David Thoreau said "the fault-finder will find faults even in paradise.
" What you focus on determines the quality of your life.
Wherever you focus is where you are, is what you are experiencing.
Where is your focus most of the day? How do you increase your happiness? I find this to be true in my life.
Everyday I experience good events and challenging events.
Some days I focus on all of the challenging events and do not even give the good events a moments notice.
I end up feeling like nothing is going right in my life and quickly find myself drawn in to a downward spiral.
It is easy to take for granted all of the good things that happen in life.
We are influenced by the media to focus on the negative events that take place.
After watching the nightly news you may even feel depressed.
There are plenty of stories about people helping people but the media focuses on negative events.
When I happen to see a story about people helping people it stirs up my positive emotions and creates a warm feeling inside of me.
How Do You Stop Taking Things for Granted? According to researchers one way to counteract "taking the goods things in life for granted" is to cultivate gratitude into your life.
What is going right in your life? What do you have that others may not have? Do you take these things for granted? I recently read a quote from Brother David Steindl-Rast, "We are dead to whatever we take for granted.
" In other words you rob yourself of experiencing positive emotions from all of the things that have gone right in your life.
You may constantly end up focusing on how things aren't the way you want them to be.
You may spend your time anxiously trying to obtain the next thing.
Are you and your family healthy? There are many children living with cancer or who are too poor to receive proper medical care.
Do you live in a nice neighborhood? Plenty of people don't.
Do you have a job you love? Many people cannot find a job.
All of us have problems and challenges but we also have many things to be grateful for.
Where is your focus? Are you focusing on how things aren't the way you want them to be? Have good things happened today? What do you take for granted? Each evening before you go to sleep write down three good things that have happened to you.
You will cultivate positive emotions that will help you meet the day's challenges.
