    • 1). Remove any remaining wax ring or debris from previous installations, if applicable, using a putty knife. Inspect the toilet flange for damage. Cast iron flanges are prone to cracking or breaking around the flange bolt holes on each side of the flange. If damaged, consider replacing the flange or installing adaptors designed to repair it.

    • 2). Insert new toilet mounting bolts in the holes on each side of the flange. Place a plastic washer on each flange bolt to hold it in place. When purchasing a new wax ring, buy one that includes the flange bolts and related hardware.

    • 3). Place the new wax ring on the flange. Center the wax ring so it aligns with the flange opening.

    • 4). Set the toilet carefully onto the toilet flange/wax ring assembly while aligning the toilet flange bolts. The bolts have to pass through the toilet mounting holes on each side of the toilet.

    • 5). Press down on the toilet to seal the wax ring. Align the toilet with the back wall until it is straight. Place a metal washer on each bolt followed by a nut. Tighten the nuts until snug using an adjustable wrench or adjustable pliers.

    • 6). Connect the water supply line to the water inlet tube on the toilet tank using an adjustable wrench or adjustable pliers. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. Flush the toilet a few times and check for leaks around the base of the toilet. If a leak is present around the toilet base, remove the toilet and replace the wax ring following the steps above.

    • 7). Caulk around the base of the toilet using a high-quality tub and tile caulk or silicone. Make sure the area around the base of the toilet is dry and free of any debris to provide a good bond.
