What Is The Right Duvet For Each Season? Or Should You Just Go Easy And Get An All Season Duvet And
Tog Rating of 4.5
When it comes to duvets, it is all about the tog. A rating of 4.5 is a very light duvet and isn't particularly dense either. As such, this is the perfect duvet for summer months. Generally, if there are two people in one bed, the room and ambient temperature can get quite high and a lower tog duvet will keep you both at the right temperature.
Tog Rating of 13.5
One the other hand of the spectrum is the 13.5 tog duvet. This is a hugely dense duvet and it is also very thick. This is the type of duvet you will come across in luxury hotels, where the duvets look almost like thick clouds. They trap the heat and are the perfect blanket for cold winter months. However, these really do get very hot so should not be used during summer, or even spring and autumn.
Tog Rating of 9
You could also opt for a happy medium, which is a tog rating of 9. Some class this as an all season duvet, others class this as an in between duvet. It isn't actually an all season, because all season duvets have a tog of 4.5 as well as a tog of 9, in essence making it a 13.5 tog duvet. The way it is constructed, however, it will either retain or release ambient heat depending on the season. A tog 9 blanket, as such, is a blanket mainly suitable for the spring and autumn months, or for people who don't experience the cold too much and want to be slightly warmer during the winter.
What makes a real difference besides the tog, however, is the material in your duvet. A real down duvet, for instance, is insulating during cold periods, yet breathable during warm periods. Care and maintenance is also important, as this will ensure heat is retained in all the right places, rather than just in areas where the filling has clumped.
