How to Apply for a Tax ID Number Online

1). Make sure it is the appropriate time to apply for your tax ID online. The online application is available Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Eastern time; Saturday 6 a.m. to 9 p.m, and Sunday from 7 a.m. to midnight.
2). Visit the IRS online application page. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click "Apply Online Now." Then click "Begin Application."
3). Select your business structure from the list. For example, select whether you are applying for a "Sole Proprietor" or "Corporation."
4). Select the reason you are applying for a tax ID number. You could select "Started a New Business" or "Hired Employees."
5). Enter your full name and social security number or taxpayer-identification number.
6). Enter your business contact information, such as the address and telephone number. Click "Continue" to review and submit your application for a tax ID number.
7). Print your confirmation notice with your tax-identification number.
