Market History
The Market is now over a hundred years old, as it was originally founded in 1909 in High Point, North Carolina. The region was rich with furniture manufacturing operations, and the Market provided furniture makers and retailers an opportunity to connect in one place for business.
At that time it was known as the Southern Furniture Market. Since it filled a very real need, it grew quickly, and by 1921 it had become an important event for the American home furnishings industry. That year the event took place at a new facility, the Southern Furniture Exposition Building
The uncertain economic times with the Great Depression, recovery and then finally World War II also saw its fortunes fluctuate. The early post-war years saw it rise in importance again.
The 1940s saw a great a great resurgence in building and home construction, giving rise to a greater demand for home furnishings.
As a result, the Market expanded in size and importance, and by the 1980s it had realized its ambition of becoming "the furniture capital of the world." In 1989 it went from being the Southern Furniture Market to becoming the International Home Furnishings Market. That year it welcomed attendees from over 100 countries.
