Make sure you keep your dogs safe and comfortable this summer, and here are a few easy tips to help you do just that.
As we all know it's tick season and they are out in full force this year.
It is best to check your dog after each walk, as to remove any ticks before they become engorged.
From head to tail with fingertips feel through all of your dog, paying special attention to ears, necks, and belly's.
If you find a tick that needs to be removed, move all the fur away best you can, rub some Vaseline on top, this will smother the tick and they will begin to remove themselves out of the skin.
With tweezers or hemostats, remove the tick and flush down the toilet.
This way you are assuring that all of the tick is removed and none is left inside the epidermis of your dogs skin to cause irritation or infection.
When going on long walks or hikes with your best buddy, remember to bring bottled water for both of you.
Freezing bottles of water are great, they are usually melted to perfection by the time you are ready to take a breather, and they stay cold for a long time, even without a cooler.
If you and your dog love the beach, try to hose down your dog after a salt water retreat.
Salt water is great for the skin, but can become dry and flaky if not rinsed off.
If you're going to be walking on tar that may become hot for your dogs pads, massage some aloe vera into the pads of your dog right before you leave, not only will your precious pet love the paw massage, this will keep the pads cool and supple.
A great bonding moment you and your dog can share is equissage, massage for dogs and cats.
Take 15 or 20 minutes a couple times a week, same time of day each time, and massage your dog's legs, back, paws and head.
This will create a lasting connection for you and your dog that is priceless as well as medicinal.
The benefits of equissage are numerous and a great way to relax your pet after a long walk or exercise session.
And always make sure to give back the love that you get from your pet as much and as often as they do.
Have a pawsitively great summer.
