How to Make Oversized Headbands for Babies

    • 1). Measure around the baby's head, from the area just behind the forehead to the base of the skull where the neck begins. Be sure to pull the tape measure taut; the lace will stretch.

    • 2). Subtract a half inch from the measurement and cut a length of stretchy lace to match that number. The lace needs to be at least 2 to 3 inches wide to accommodate any bows or flowers that will be attached to it, but it can be wider.

    • 3). Stitch the ends of the lace together to form a circle. This circle is the headband. If you like, slide the headband around the baby's head to make sure it fits and make adjustments, if necessary. It needs to be snug, but not tight; too-tight headbands could irritate or even injure the baby.

    • 4). Choose a large bow or flower to attach to the headband. It's important that the base of the decoration not be larger than the headband material so that it can be firmly anchored onto the headband. Place the decoration just to the right or left of the center of the headband's top.

    • 5). Sew the bow or flower to the headband with tight stitches. For bows, it's easy to go through the ribbon to firmly attach them to the headband material. For flowers, it may be easier to whip the thread around the blossom rather than pierce the plastic base.
