    • Vinyl floors are made of a plastic resin that is supported by layers of other materials. Most vinyl floors have a core of fiberboard, a primary resin layer, a design layer that can resemble stone or wood and a clear protective layer so the rest does not become damaged. Vinyl floors need to be cleaned, but you cannot use abrasives, waxes or strong solvents on them without wearing off the outer coating.

    Brooms and Vacuum Cleaners

    • For most dirt problems you can clean up the mess with brooms and vacuum cleaners. Brooms are useful for small areas with hard-to-reach corners that a vacuum cleaner can't manage. Vacuum cleaners are good for more open spaces, but do not use any version with bars that can scrape the vinyl. Keep a soft towel handy too, for cleaning up spills and spots.

    Manufacturer Cleaners

    • You may be tempted to view manufacturer-based cleaners as a way for the vinyl floor companies to make extra profit, but these cleaners are often very useful. Manufacturers know what will harm their floors and what will not and can make light cleaning solutions that will not damage your vinyl.

    Detergent

    • Detergents excel at breaking the bonds dirt makes with surfaces around your home. If you want to make your own vinyl cleaner, add a small amount of detergent to warm water, and use this solution with a sponge. Only use detergents for stains that you cannot get out with other options.

    Sealer

    • Vinyl seam sealers help protect the vinyl from moisture leaks and permanent stains. If your vinyl is old and worn, use a vinyl sealer to help keep it clean. If you are installing the vinyl, add a sealant once the floor is fully installed.
