    Locating Metallic Pipes

    • 1). Set the sensitivity control to the normal setting on your magnetic locating device. Sweep the device from side to side, waiting for the sensor to pick up a metallic object.

    • 2). Place the receiver directly over an area with a signal. If the signal is on the negative or positive side of the readout, you have found one end of the pipe. Mark this location with orange spray paint.

    • 3). Scan the area for the other end of the pipe. This will be shown on the display as an opposite polarity than was discovered in Step 2. Mark this area with the spray paint and join the two locations together. If the magnetic locator gives an audio signal, this means it has found a vertical metal pipe.
