    • 1). Vacuum the mattress and the carpet around the bed well to remove all bedbugs, eggs and bedbug excrement. Eggs are white and may be hard to see on your mattress, so your best bet is to vacuum the entire mattress with vacuum cleaner attachments. Bedbug excrement is brown or red and easier to detect with the naked eye.

    • 2). Pour coconut extract in a spray bottle and spray the mattress to kill the eggs and bedbugs. Spray along the frame, underneath the mattress and around bed's legs.

    • 3). Sprinkle boric acid around your bed to keep bedbugs away. Pay particular attention to the bed legs. Bedbugs die when they make direct contact with boric acid. Do not apply boric acid to the mattress or box springs as it will cause severe skin irritation. Leave the boric acid in place overnight, then vacuum well. Reapply if needed.

    • 4). Steam-clean the mattress, box springs and the carpet underneath the bed. If you suspect the bedbugs are infesting the entire room, use the steamer along the edges of the wall where the carpet meets the wall. This is a prime hiding place for bedbugs.
