KEY 1 Learn from the example of the servant leaders you meet It's a new subject for me, I can't really say that I am an expert in the subject yet though I know I have some valuable insight into this subject.
There is nothing like hands on experience.
Knowing servant leaders, men of great humility is a great start if you are going to move into this role in the future.
Knowing men that are quick to take the lowest seat, not sit at the back of the room because they are a rebel at church, but leave the better seats for the people that can benefit the best from being up the front.
These men and women are gentle, humble.
Considerate, understanding, compassionate and many of them have had lives marked with great emotional turmoil in their past and present.
But despite how ill their life is at the moment, despite their personal pain, they are first to have a shoulder to cry onto and a heart to listen to the brokenhearted.
They are slow to speak and quick to listen.
They have their won opinions but they don't rush in with them, and wait till they are asked before they try and offer advice or direction.
They build deep and abiding trust in the people they are leading.
People like me watch them for a year or so and learn so much.
People with pride might try and walk all over them, but their humility wins when all is said and done and their lives show real honest shining qualities.
The proud person speaks and makes a lot of noise, whilst the servant leader when they speak, they are soft spoken but people really listen as they don't make a habit of being the one out in front all the time.
KEY 2 Be willing to serve where you might not get recognition.
Servant leadership flies in the face of the traditional workforce.
It's the chef cooking a nice meal for the kitchen hand and asking him over a meal how his life is really going.
It's the head chef that helps the kitchen hand hose down the floor after a days work because it's going to help the kitchen hand that has been working so hard all day.
The head chef isn't going to get promoted for what he is doing in that kitchen hands life, but that guy washing the dishes all day will do anything for that head chef when he is asked.
He will leave a stacked up bench of dishes and go and get that chef a coffee or he'll drive that chefs car down the service station a detail it for the chef he's asked.
Why? Because someone greater then him served him! Anyone can Lord it over people with a position of authority.
People can demand respect out of employees fear or they can earn respect.
I have had two types of bosses in my life and I enjoy the ones I respect.
Washing dishes is a hard job with few people that give your respect, but when your head chef starts to grab the pots and pans and put them away for you it like you could reach over and give him a big hug.
I once had a store manager of a McDonald's restaurant roll up his sleeves and put his arms into really greasy water as we were doing some monthly maintenance cleaning in the restaurant and tell me to get back to managing the rest of the staff in the restaurant and doing my job.
I would of done anything for that guy after that.
No one would have noticed that job he did that day, not even the owner of the store would have seen that, but the most important person in his store saw it that day, the guy he was training to become a fine manager one day in his store, me! Auto Biographies are great places to read a good leaders life from childhood to the time when he did great exploits.
You get plenty of good tips from them in the course of the book.
One account you should not ignore is the life of the greatest servant leader of all time.
His story is recorded in the first four books of the New Testament in the Bible.
The books are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
When you get a copy of a Bible, get a red letter edition of the Bible, for in that edition it records in red writing all the sayings of Jesus and his teachings.
Observe the man who once was in heaven before coming to earth in a position of power and who came as a humble poor baby in a stable.
This man had the greatest impact of any man in history and he led like a true servant.
His the same today, a good honest look at His life 2000 years ago might do you some real good.
