Fashion photography business- is it good to start with?
Fashion photography as a career can be anything for an option but as far as my personal experience is concerned its one heck of a lousy decision. There's nothing lucrative about it when it comes to stabilizing future dreams of having a comfortable wealthy life. I'm sure most of us desire those days where you have decent money when you retire and are able to send of your kids to college and just basically enjoy the retirement stage. And photography especially fashion photography does nothing to support it. I'm saying this out of experience both in and outside of photography. And if you're considering fashion photography as an option then this article is a must read before you just solidify on this for your life. Reflect on the points I give you.
Let me just start off with what we basically define as the income groups of the economy. First of all there are Investors; these are the ones who are the wealthiest sections of the society. They invest money to earn more money and usually are the ones who live by every pleasure and don't have to struggle much. Then there are Professionals; these include lawyers, doctors, accountants etc. they charge a comfortable fees for their expertise and usually are able to accumulate decent enough wealth to live a relaxed life. Thirdly are the Corporate. Now, these people conclude of those who charge a good fess over the wages and are mostly in hand to mouth situations while some, do good savings over the years. After this, come the government employees.
These are the least affected economical groups and usually get most of the benefits from the government. They're incomes are lesser than most but they do enjoy a comfortable retirement age. After all this what I've told you about comes the career of a Fashion Photography. With absolutely no stability in the line, more than often fashion photographers or professional photographers are seen struggling with their lives. They are at the bottom of the wealth creation link chain and I have my reasons as to why. Read on! First of all, there is absolutely, absolutely no barrier to entry. You have a professional camera and enough money for website; you've become a professional photographer. You don't need any kind of schooling, education, qualifications or expertise to enter into this industry. Secondly, there zero leverage or scalability. Until and unless you're going to open up a store or rather a chain of employee-run stores you're going to have zero leverage. You are just simply trading your time for money, as there is only couple of hours in a day before you drop dead. Thirdly, there is absolutely zero equity building. The day you shoot your last, you'll have no income. Photography business does nothing for building equity in the market. Lastly, there are no benefits. As in case of having a job in an MNC you are provided with benefits such as life insurance, employee wellness programs, reimbursement for health club memberships etc. But a photographer will have to buy his own health insurance etc. The main purpose of this article was not to aesthetically demolish the idea of becoming a professional photographer but to help you make an informed and a balanced decision.
