The World of Futon Mattresses

We are all in thrifty mode these days.
The economy has people worried and so when it comes to spending money, Americans are slower to pull out the credit card.
More and more people are trying to wait and replace an item when it is actually broken or worn out.
Gone are the days of simply upgrading because, well because you want to upgrade.
When you need a new futon mattress, you will know it.
If the futon is primarily used as a couch, your behind will let you know that the cushioning is gone on the mattress.
If the futon is used primarily as a bed, your back (or your spouse) will let you know with a persistent nagging pain.
So, you need a new futon mattress.
There are dozens of styles to choose from -- how do you know which one is right for you? The first question is do you use the mattress as a bed? If the answer is Yes, then you will go down one path.
Sleeping futons come in a variety of constructions.
You could categorize these into soft, medium and firm mattresses.
A soft mattress will have a foam core.
If you can afford a mattress with a high density foam core, you should spend the money.
The mattress will feel heavenly and it will last longer.
You are always going to get what you pay for with mattresses.
A medium feel mattress might have an innerspring core.
I know that seems weird for a futon to have springs, but it's a newer variation and it works really well.
Around the spring core will be a few thinner layers of foam and then cotton or wool batting.
A firm mattress is going to have a foam core with a few interlocking pieces of foam on either side.
Then several inches of cotton will be added to give the mattress loft.
For a firm mattress, the foam core is key as it will keep the cotton from compressing too much.
If you need to replace the mattress on your couch, you need slightly different specs.
The most important thing to look for in replacing your couch mattress is the polyester content.
Lots of futons have a poly-blend.
Polyester helps the futon retain rigidity so you want more polyester in your mattress.
It's got to bend easily, so you need some foam, but not too much.
A thin center of high density foam is perfect.
Surround that core with layers of cotton and poly-cotton blend and you have the perfect couch.
