- 1). Select the charity you wish to donate the car to. Look at what the charity focuses on and who they help when making your decision. Donate a Car 2 Charity, Action Donation Services and Give Cars (see Resources) are just a few car donation services available in Colorado. Some of these car donation services work with several charitable organizations and allow you to choose the charity you want the proceeds from your car to be donated to.
- 2). Locate the title to the car you want to donate. If you cant find it, then apply for a replacement title at the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles before donating the vehicle. You can find the title replacement forms on the DMV website. Transfer the title by signing the release on the back of the title. Keep or leave the license plates on the car, as these do not need to be returned to the Division of Motor Vehicles.
- 3). Call the donation center you have chosen and ask them to pick up the vehicle. Most donation centers will pick up within a day or two.
- 4). Determine the use of the vehicle once it has been donated. The donation company must contact you within 30 days to inform you of the sale or use of the vehicle. Ask for the amount of the sale so you can deduct this amount from your federal taxes when you file. IRS regulations allow you to deduct the sale value of the car by the charitable organization. However, if the organization decides to put the car to use, then the full market value for the vehicle can be deducted.
