Soho is a compression of the phrase, "South of Houston Street." It refers to the section of Manhattan bordered by Houston Street on the north, Canal Street on the south, Broadway on the east, and the Hudson River to the west. In the late 1960s, the commercial lofts of this industrial area were converted into studios by avant-garde artists. In the decades since, Soho has become a chic location brimming with art galleries and upscale shopping. Naturally, the area also boasts some rather expensive lodging.
