    Access

    • Only two bridges connect the island to the mainland. The northernmost bridge enters the island close to North Topsail Beach, providing easy assess to the area. U.S. 210 links North Topsail Beach with the rest of the island.

    Climate

    • In January, North Topsail Beach has an average temperature of about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, with the average water temperature about 48 degrees Fahrenheit. February is just a few degrees warmer. By April, temperatures average about 62 with water temperatures around the same point. As summer arrives, temperatures rise into the 80s with water temperatures slightly lower than the air temperatures. During the fall months, the water temperature remains about 70 degrees; the air temperature drops into the 70s and 60s. December temperatures drop even further with high temperatures of both water and air in the 50s. It rains on average about three to four inches a month, with more occurring in the summer month.

    Activities

    • Hands down, the most notable attraction is the beach, and most of the activates feature the water in some for or another. You can swim, surf, beach-comb and sunbathe. Fish at one of the piers. You can scuba dive to view the shipwrecks off the coast. Tour Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, which rehabilitates injured turtles. Take a boat ride out on the ocean where you can fish, watch the sea life or just relax to the sway of the boat. You can scuba dive to view the abundant and colorful sea life. You can travel down the island and take in Surf City or return to the mainland. Other activities include parasailing, kayaking, and wind surfing.

    Endangered Wildlife

    • Officially, loggerhead turtles were listed as endangered in July 28, 1978, under the Endangered Species Act. This species is one of the most common turtles nesting on North Topsail Island. Topsail Turtle Project is a group of locals, who monitor the number of turtle eggs and hatchlings. According to Visit NC tourist website, the existing turtle patrols welcome volunteers to assist in their mission. Nesting season occurs from mid-May to August.
