  Portland is located where Maine's Fore River meets the Atlantic Ocean, and is both Maine's capitol and largest city. Although approximately one quarter of Maine's total population lives in the Portland area, the city is laid back uncrowded. Portland has a number of museums, and theaters, and visitors also can enjoy exploring more than a dozen islands by boat while staying at one of the nearby resorts.

• The Alouette Beach resort is 16 miles from Portland and has a wide variety of accommodations, from economy rooms, to Jacuzzi suites, to multi-room cottages. Many of these enjoy ocean views, and all are within an easy walk to the beach. Waves Ocean Front Resort

• The Waves Ocean Front Resort provides guests with a choice between three different types of guest rooms and a number of cottages. All guest rooms come equipped with cable television and all have ocean views. All cottages have cable television, full kitchens with a microwave, refrigerator, and a stove and air conditioning. All cottages are either right on the beach, or just a few steps away. Resort amenities include an outdoor pool, an onsite café and restaurant, and a fitness center. The resort is a short walk from the pier at Old Orchard Beach, which has a variety of restaurants, shops, and an amusement park.
