Need to Cure Your Golf Slice? Get a Grip!
and the swing...
look at that divot fly! Holy Cow! Did he just slice his DIVOT?! Look at that, the ball just came right around and hit him in the side of the head!! MEDIC! There are a lot of factors that can cause a golf slice.
One of the most common (if not the most common) is an incorrect grip.
I know...
it took me a long time to get a grip! I was taught to have my thumbs in a line down the shaft of the club.
Hmmm...
not working out so well.
Once I figured out what I was doing wrong, my slice percentage dropped to about 10% of my drives.
Still not perfect, but MAN did it shave strokes off of my game! There's a really simple drill you can use to train your grip.
It uses two tees to line up your hands properly.
Stick a tee in the 'V' between your thumb and forefinger on each hand.
Then grip your club normally and line up the tees looking straight down the club.
It may seem a little uncomfortable until you've trained your muscles to do it automatically, but it will make an incredible difference in your swing mechanics.
The reason for this drill is because if you let your arm hang at your side in a relaxed position, you'll notice that your hand will turn in toward your body.
It doesn't hang with the palm facing your leg.
If you try to grip your club with the palms facing each other, it's an unnatural position and they will try to fall into the natural position facing about 45 degrees to the rear.
If this happens during your swing, you've just opened up the club face and, PRESTO! One slice, coming up! You'll also notice that this grip will put less pressure on your elbows and, consequently, your back as well.
So use this drill to develop a proper (and more natural) grip and you'll see a dramatic improvement in your swing, and a dramatic decrease in your slice.
Practice this until it becomes more comfortable and ENJOY! Until next time...
