Fantasy Football Stock Watch: Jake Delhomme QB CAR
If your like yours truly when it comes to drafting a QB in your annual fantasy football draft, you wait until at least the third round to snag your passer after you have settled on your two running backs. With most leagues requiring only one QB spot, this is the more prudent method of drafting, despite the allure of adding a blockbuster QB such as Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer. There are many second tier passers that could put up great numbers for your squad and give you balanced scroing all season long. For the last few seasons, one of these second tier guys has been Carolina Panthers QB Jake Delhomme. While not to be confused with the Mannings, Palmers, or even Marc Bulgers of the world, Delhomme has usually been a solid source of steady TD's to go along with decent yardage totals. That is until last season.
2007 proved to be a season of great dissapointment for both Delhomme and his fantasy owners. A broken thumb cost Jake a number of starts and prevented him from feeling comfortable all year long. The 17 TD's were the fewest he had since he played for the Saints and by season's end, many fantasy owners showed their frustration by relegating Delhomme to the waiver wire. A bad season to say the least.
As we enter 2007, the question is whether or not Delhomme can be trusted to be a decent fantasy QB. My answer to that is that I don't believe Delhomme is worthy of starting status anymore and is better off serving as a bye week fill-in or as a backup on your roster. The fact that Carolina added the talented but erratic David Carr to serve as his backup only enhances the idea that Delhomme may not be long for the starting job if he starts off the season struggling. Carr would be the perfect type of QB for the Panthers to turn to for the future as the former number 1 pick has all the tools to succeed but never got much help in Houston. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this development took place by mid-season. In other words, avoid Delhomme on draft day and look elsewhere for your second tier starting quarterback.
