Types of Nephilim
- The Anakim were a Philistine race of giants also known as the Anakites. They were descended from a giant named Arba, who was the father of Anak. These giants then came to be known as the sons or descendants of Anak. Both Joshua and David constantly encountered them and defeated them. Goliath, the giant that David killed, was one of the Anakim.
- The Rephaim were a race of giants who lived east of the Jordan. They were also known as the Rephaites and are often included in the list of Canaanite nations: the Hittites, Perizzites, Amorites and Jebusites. Rephaim mentioned in the Bible include Ishbi-Benob, Saph and King Og of Bashan. King Og was considered the last of the Rephaim. The Israelites first encountered the Rephaim on their journey to Canaan.
- The Emim were an ancient race of giants also known as the Emites. King Kedorlaomer originally defeated them during the time when Abraham's nephew, Lot, was taken captive during the war. Emim lived in the land of Moab, and the Bible describes them as being as tall as the Anakites. They are a type of Rephaim, called Emim by the Moabites and Zamzummim by the Amorites.
- Gibborim is a Hebrew word that refers to mighty men. Six hundred men assisted David while he was on the run from King Saul. The Bible refers to them as gibborim. Although this is the same word used to describe the Nephilim during the time of the flood, there is some question regarding whether these men really were giants.
