    Function

    • Elavil is primarily prescribed to treat the symptoms of mental depression which may include feelings of sadness, lack of energy and anxiety, along with low self esteem. Elavil also may be used to prevent migraine headaches, control chronic pain, as well as to treat an eating disorder (bulima) and a pathological weeping and laughing syndrome exhibited with multiple sclerosis.

    Side Effects

    • Common side effects may include diarrhea, dizziness and drowsiness as well as difficulty sleeping and a change in sexual desire, along with weakness and tiredness. Elderly patients are particularly prone to certain side effects, although they may affect anyone; these include constipation, dry mouth and blurred vision. The elderly may also experience rapid heart beat, sedation and confusion along with the risk of falling. Patients should seek medical advice and treatment for any of these symptoms.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Seek immediate medical care for any of these serious side effects, which may include: irregular heart rate, chest pain and fainting and tremors along with severe numbness and confusion. There may also be decreased urinary output, muscle weakness or restless, muscle movements of the eyes, jaw or tongue and neck. In addition there may be hallucinations, seizures and problems with speech and balance and swelling of the breasts in male or female patients.

    Allergic Reaction

    • An allergic reaction is a serious medical emergency--seek immediate medical care for any of the following symptoms: itching, rash or hives as well as tightness in the chest, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. Other symptoms include swelling of the face, mouth, tongue or throat.

    Considerations

    • To prevent drug interaction it's important to discuss with your doctor your medical history, including any medicines you may be taking, before you take Elavil. Many medications may interact with Elavil, including albuterol, other antidepressants, such an amoxapine and certain blood pressure medications such as clonidine. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.
