Living in the Mobile Era, everybody is talking of WAP these days.
But what is WAP? Wireless Application Protocol also called WAP is simply a channel via which users can access information on their wireless devices like mobile phones, pagers, smart phones, etc.
It was designed by wireless industry to enable internet access on mobile devices.
It is simply a protocol used for communicating information and enables to create web applications for mobile devices and enables Internet connectivity on mobile phones.
WAP supports most wireless networks like CDPD, CDMA, GSM, PDC, PHS, TDMA, FLEX, ReFLEX, iDEN, TETRA, DECT, DataTAC, and Mobitex.
WAP sites are websites written or converted into it using WML language.
Although WAP supports HTML and XML, the WML language is the most compatible one.
It also supports WML Script which is similar to Java script and makes minimal demands on computer memory and other hardware & software and is free from necessary functions found in other scripting languages.
As WAP is supported by most of the mobile devices, so according to the small size of the mobile phone it uses a micro browser.
The micro browser works the same way as the web browser.
But there are a certain constraints, pertaining to the small size and limited memory of the mobile handset.
But a WAP phone is extremely useful while on the go.
As most of the workforce across the world is on the move, it becomes very important to remain connected with resources.
WAP phones allow easy access from any where and any time while you are on the move.
You can have the latest weather reports, find a railway station, hotel, and restaurant, and Check a game score, book tickets and above all read news or access emails.
Although, the WAP phone does not offer the same visual experience which you can have on the PC or laptop yet it caters to the inherent need of the mobile users to communicate with suppliers, consumers and friends while on the move.
Initially the mobile companies like Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, etc were looking for independent standards to provide internet facilities to their customers but then they felt the need to develop a standard tool.
WAP is in the process of continuous development and major websites are making more and more WAP content available for mobile browsing.
Today, almost all the cell phones support WAP.
Whether it is a PDA, smart phone or an ordinary handset, WAP allows you to do all.
You can surf the net as you surf on your computer and also access emails.
These days there are many companies providing free email access on the mobile phones like gmail wireless and many others down the list.
You can also create your mobile email ID directly from your WAP phone.
These days many companies allow you to create a free mobile email account directly from your handset whereby you can send , receive, compose, delete and view attachments at the same time.
Moreover you can also use the social networking features like chat and video sharing on your wap phone.
A WAP phone frees you from the bondage of a Desk top PC or laptop.
As a WAP phone has the advantage of fitting into a pocket or purse.
It is extremely convenient to have online access from anywhere.
