How to Grow Commercial Bird Seed

    • 1). Start your birdseed garden in early spring, to give plants the spring and summer for growing and blooming. Choose a spot in your yard or garden that gets full sun all day and good, complete drainage. Although it's hard to tell what seeds may grow in your birdseed mix, most plants and flowers require full sun if they're to bloom and grow. Don't choose any area that puddles when it rains, since this may drown or damage the seeds or plants.

    • 2). Amend the soil with a traditional gardening mixture of half quick-draining soil and half organic compost. This mixture will give plants and flowers the support and nutrition they need to grow. Turn the mixture into the top 2 inches of the garden soil, or spread it on top of areas that puddle, to raise seeds off the ground.

    • 3). Spread commercial birdseed over the soil. Scatter the seeds so that each one has some growing room, since a crowded garden may keep some flowers from growing. Rake the site to dig your seeds into the soil and cover any exposed seeds with a scattering of your soil mixture. Water the site with an inch of water and start your new birdseed garden on a schedule of an inch of water a week. Use a watering can or spray nozzle on the hose to avoid displacing seed when you're watering.
