How to: Native American Hoop Dance
- 1). Attend performances of Native Americans performing a variety of hoop dances. Observe the use of the hoops to symbolize birds, animals and other creatures.
- 2). Attend a Native American Pow Wow or other ceremonial festival at the nearest Indian reservation at which hoop dances are being performed. Participate in those parts of the dances in which audience members are included.
- 3). Contact a local hoop dancer or Native American cultural center to request instruction in hoop dancing, or "hooping," as it is familiarly known. Develop original story lines which you want to portray in your dance. Work with the Native American hoop dancer to identify the best use of the hoops, and how many you will need, to carry out your performance plans.
- 4). Practice your dance repeatedly to perfect the sequencing and fluidity of the movements and the handling of the hoops.
- 5). Purchase or create a traditional Native American costume to wear during your hooping performances, keeping in mind whatever you wear will need to allow for fluid dance steps and the smooth movement of the hoops around your arms, legs, head and torso.
