- 1). Analyze your surroundings to determine if other people are in earshot of the person you want to approach, consider the noise level and decide if the timing is right.
- 2). Think about the situation and determine if the conversation style is professional or casual. If you're at a work related function, it may be appropriate to shake hands and introduce yourself with your professional title. On the other hand, if you're at a cocktail party with friends, you may want to casually stroll up to the person, introduce yourself and ask how he or she knows the host.
- 3). Open the conversation with a casual greeting and introduce yourself. Give the person a compliment on jewelry, clothing, a presentation or anything else that may apply to the situation.
- 4). Ask questions about their work, family, friends and hobbies. Listen carefully and respond to their answers.
- 5). Tell the person a little about yourself and point out similarities in friends, work and social activities.
