Introduction


The growth in ecotourism, studying abroad, medical tourism, mission work, and international disaster relief has expanded the need for travel medicine consults. A cornerstone of travel medicine is travel immunization. Travel immunizations may be required or recommended based on a customized risk assessment, according to any individual traveler's itinerary. Many factors (e.g., climate, elevation, outdoor exposure, duration of travel, food and water sources, sanitation, mosquito habitats, season) contribute to an individual's specific risk of selected infections and determine the need for immunization. This article updates pharmacists on mandatory and selective- use travel immunizations for immunocompetent and nonpregnant adults.
