    Significance

    • IRS Form 1722, now called a Verification of Nonfiling, is an official IRS letter confirming that a taxpayer did not file taxes for a particular tax year.

    How to Request

    • IRS Form 1722 can be requested by completing IRS Form 4506-T, checking the box marked "Verification of Nonfiling" and mailing it to the IRS, or by calling the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

    Time Frame

    • If you call the Internal Revenue Service, they often can fax you a Verification of Nonfiling while you are on the line. Requests made by mail using Form 4506-T usually are processed within 10 business days.

    Restrictions

    • There are no restrictions to the number of years for which you can request a Verification of Nonfiling.

    Warning

    • Requests for a Verification of Nonfiling for the current tax year are usually not available until June 15.
