How to Apply for Social Insurance
- 1). Determine your needs. Social Insurance is provided for reasons related to unemployment, childcare, health care and retirement. Each service has its own application process and procedure.
- 2). Apply for unemployment insurance. You must file your claim online (see Resources). The Employment Insurance (EI) website within Service Canada provides a form that walks you through the application, eligibility requirements and what you're allowed to receive. You will need a Record of Employment (ROE) to apply for Employment Insurance online.
- 3). Obtain a record of employment. Request this document from your recent employers in paper format. You will need an ROE from employers over the last 52 weeks. Your employer can also submit an ROE to Service Canada electronically. If so, these records are available the same day they are submitted by your employer. Use the "My Service Canada Account" to print copies. You should receive the first payment within 28 days from the date the application is submitted.
- 4). Apply for maternity or parental leave under the EI program. Individuals who are pregnant, have recent given birth, are adopting a child or caring for a newborn are eligible for maternity and parental benefits. The application process can be done online using the same online form for Employment Insurance. Residents of Quebec should receive services from a program called the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (see Resources).
- 5). Apply to the skills development program. The program provides financial support for skills-based training and helps those interested in post-secondary education with locating an ideal institution.
- 6). Apply for child care benefits. If you have a child under the age of six, you are eligible for the Universal Care benefit, a $100 monthly payment. You must apply for this program online as well using the same application process.
- 7). Apply for retirement pension. If you have reached retirement age, you can apply for the Canada Pension Plan retirement pension and the Old Age Security pension. Submit an application six months before turning 65. The application kit can be printed from the website or contact Service Canada to request an application by mail (see Resources).
