    Check Unclaimed Funds

    • 1). Visit missingmoney.com. This website, established by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, offers online search tools for finding unclaimed bank accounts held by state governments. You can search here for old accounts for which you have lost track.

    • 2). Search on the name of the account holder for the bank account you are researching. Enter a two-letter code for the state or Canadian province to search. You can also enter the code "ZZ" to search all available records, regardless of state or province.

    • 3). Click on a link to an unclaimed fund record, if any are found for the name you searched. Follow the instructions provided to notify the state holding the unclaimed funds, and to claim them if they belong to you. The notification and claim process is different in each state so pay careful attention to the correct procedures.

    Check the FDIC

    • 1). Visit the Bank Find website of the FDIC, one of the key banking regulators in the United States.

    • 2). Enter the name of the bank that held the account you are researching. Include the city and state in the relevant fields, if these are known. Click "Find" to access records for this bank.

    • 3). Check the bank history information. This will identify the current institution that holds any historical accounts from the bank you are researching, even if the bank no longer exists.

    • 4). Contact the Customer Service department of the current bank that holds the assets of the bank you are researching. The representative will provide details of the status of the account and information about how to access it.
