How to Replace Toilet Bases
- 1). Shut off the water supply. Usually this is located on the wall behind the toilet. Follow the hose from the tank (the inlet hose) to where it meets the wall. This is where the shut off valve should be.
- 2). Flush the toilet to get rid of all the water. Clean up any extra with the sponge and towels.
- 3). Unscrew the water inlet hose from the tank.
- 4). Remove the tank from the bowl. In most toilet models, you will find two bolts at the bottom of the tank holding it to the bowl. The heads on these are usually slotted for screwdrivers so you can hold them steady while you undo the bolts below with a wrench.
- 5). Set the tank aside.
- 6). Unscrew the bolts located on the toilet base. These are usually protected by plastic caps. Pull the caps off, and loosen the bolts with a wrench. Remove the plastic and metal washers as well.
- 7). Gently rock the toilet base back and forth to loosen it from the flange. When you feel it come loose, pull it up and out of the way.
- 8). Clean off any wax ring remnants left around the flange. A putty knife is good for this.
- 9). Press a new wax ring into the flange on the floor. Replace the old flange bolts with new ones.
- 10
Turn the new toilet base over, and apply a thin bead of plumber's putty along the bottom rim of the bowl. This will ensure a good seal. - 11
Rotate the new base so that it is right-side up again. Gently lower this back onto the flange. You will need to also make sure that the bolts protrude through the holes in the base of the bowl. Once you've done this, set the bowl down. Press it firmly into place. - 12
Replace the toilet base metal and plastic washers. Tighten the nuts on the bolts. Hand tighten them at first. Then tighten one turn on one side and one turn on the other. Saw off the tops of the bolts with a hacksaw so that the plastic caps fit. - 13
Set the tank back on top of the bowl, making sure to align the cone gasket on the bottom of the tank with the inlet on the bowl. - 14
Drop the tank bolts and washers through the holes in the bottom of the tank. Tighten from the bottom with the remaining washers and nuts. - 15
Before reattaching the water inlet hose, dab a few drops of plumber's goop to the inlet fitting, or wrap it with plumber's tape. This will ensure a watertight seal. - 16
Turn on the water, and allow the toilet to fill. - 17
Flush the toilet, and check for leaks. Caulk around the bottom of the toilet base.
