Most parents will tell you that video games are a favorite pastime of their children.
They've even gotten past the point now of sitting down to watch television programs as their interaction comes basically from the games.
It's has almost become an impossibility to get the kids to join in any other outside activity.
There are some things that you can do about this though and one of these is having learning parties.
How you go about this is you get your children and their friends together and you plan the event for the following weekend and if possible it should be an overnight event.
What you need to do is get them to pick a theme such as perhaps taking a look at another country and the lifestyles that take place within that country.
So now that you've chosen the theme you get them to start doing the research about that country from a viewpoint of kids their own age.
Once you have got the research done then they need to plan to put it into action.
They need to be able to create the atmosphere from what country they are learning about and this includes the mealtimes as well so they will need to plan the menu.
Allow the kids to plan the menus because they are the ones that are going to have to prepare it under your supervision of course.
They need to be able to decorate to create the atmosphere of the country that they are working on but the catch is they must make the decorations.
They also need to learn what some of the entertainment that is found in that country because they're going to be doing that as well.
This is what learning parties are all about.
You will be quite surprised at how enthusiastic kids become about this once they get into it.
It might take a little bit of convincing to get them to start but once they do and they have had a most successful weekend living in another country you're going to find that they will want to participate in this sort of activity on several occasions.
The reason you want to start this week ahead of time is because you want to give them time to prepare and you want it to be so that their friends can come over and participate as well.
You will probably find that this is not as much exercise as you would like them to have but a lease it starts to break the pattern of sitting in front of the video games every free moment.
This is one of the goals of the learning parties.
If you have more than one child chances are you going to get some bickering over what country they're going to set the fantasy weekend for? If this is the case then have them pick from a jar from where you have slips of paper with several countries listed.
