It will take some research to find a low cost airfare to the islands. Try Priceline, Expedia, Sidestep.com or other websites to compare fares. If you watch the computer every two or three days, there may be bargains as low as $300-$600 airfare roundtrip. Also allow extra if you are traveling from the east coast as airfare will be more.

Sweet scent of Frangipangi Where would you like to go? Waikiki Beach is the number one tourist destination however it is expensive to visit the island of Oahu where Honolulu, Pearl Harbor and Waikiki Beach are located. You might save those for another time.

Same for the other islands of Kuai and Maui. Housing and rental cars can add up. The islands are beautiful but because nearly everything is brought in by boat, it can be expensive just for a meal. On all the islands, there are many chain stores such as Walmart, Costco, Sears, Officemax, and Home Depot among others.

The least expensive island is the Big Island of Hawaii. It is the largest and, as far as land mass, all the other islands of the chain could be placed inside the large island. The true flavor of the islands can be felt here. The World's Hula festival is held here in April every year. It is called the Merry Monarch Festival.

The Big Island of Hawaii is also the least expensive. A great breakfast can be had for as little as eight dollars at the award winning restaurant Ken's in Hilo on the Big Island and at many other restaurants. There are many hometown tasty eating places very reasonably priced. Plus a farmers market Wednesdays and Saturdays for fresh produce, and tasty island fruits not found on the mainland.

There are many Hawaii websites you can research to find inexpensive lodgings. One of my favorite condohotels is Country Club Hawaii in Hilo on the Big Island. It is right on Hilo Bay and my favorite is condo #420 with two doublebeds and a small kitchenette, with oceanview and it usually rents for three hundred fifty dollars a week or sixty dollars a night. If that one is rented, they have others but the cost is more. It's clean and inexpensive lodging, right on the water, and has a swimming pool.

Hilo is also closest to the Volcano State Parks entrance, the second largest tourist attraction in the islands. There are many exotic waterfalls near Hilo as it located on the wet side of the island, creating the lush tropical climate. There are black sand, white sand and green sand beaches on the Big Island.
