Rules for NFL Kickoffs
- A kickoff needs to travel at least 10 yards or be touched by someone on the receiving team before it is considered legal.
- Once a kickoff goes 10 yards or is touched by someone on the receiving team, it is considered live and can be recovered by the kicking team.
- A kickoff cannot score a field goal, even if it goes through the uprights. But the receiving team can return a kickoff for a touchdown if it can carry it all the way to the end zone.
- If the ball goes out of bounds and the receiving team touched it last, play begins at the location where the ball went out.
- If the ball goes out of bounds and no one on the receiving team touched it, play starts at one of two places: 30 yards from the location of the kick or at the location it went out of bounds.
