Definition:

American archaeologist Merrilee Salmon is one of the few true philosophers of our profession. In books such as "Philosophy and Archaeology" and "Introduction to Logic and Critical Thinking" she has argued for a systems approach to the study of archaeology, and the need for ethical and logical underpinnings for what we do as scientists. My favorite Salmon article is called "Ethical considerations in anthropology and archaeology, or relativism and justice for all?", published in 1997 in the Journal of Anthropological Research (53:47-63).

She is emeritus professor at the University of Pittsburgh.
