How to Use the Smartboard in Elementary Classrooms
- 1). Use the Smartboard tools to create appealing visuals that teach about processes and patterns. For example, create a food web by inserting colorful pictures and text to show the relationship between the different parts of the chain. This helps students visualize the concept and retain information better.
- 2). Teach math concepts by using the electronic protractors, dice, clocks and spinner tools. For example, use the shape tool and graph paper to teach students about perimeter and area. Insert graphics and create virtual manipulatives to teach about long division. Use the interactive dice to explain concepts of probability. Emphasize the crucial steps in calculations using the digital highlighter.
- 3). Employ the Smartboard to teach writing skills to students. For example, insert a picture as a starting point for a story. Ask students to type in sentences to grow the story. When the story is complete, encourage children to use the Smartboard pens to make corrections and edit the text.
- 4). Use the Smartboard to teach Internet navigation to students. Get students to learn about geography and history through the use of maps. Use online links to virtual field trips to learn about cultures and civilizations. Import and save files from National Geographic and Discovery Channel to use as real-life examples when explaining relevant concepts.
- 5). Train students in the use of presentation software. Help children create a PowerPoint slideshow to introduce themselves. Explain about choosing templates, inserting pictures, adding animation and incorporating sound effects. Divide students into groups and work on creating presentations on themes and teach how to upload them to the school website.
- 6). Explore the possibility of using the Smartboard for distance learning. Speak to your school administrator about signing up for webcasts and webinars that provide students access to information on relevant topics while sitting in the classroom.
