How to Grow a Mulberry Tree
- 1). Plant the mulberry in an area protected from winds that receives partial shade. Choose a site with well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter.
- 2). Stake newly planted mulberry trees for the first two to four years after planting. Insert a stake into the ground on either side of the trunk, placing the stakes 12 to 24 inches from the trunk. Tie the trunk to each stake with a tree tie or soft cord. Mulberries are top heavy, which prevents slender young trunks from supporting the canopy of the tree properly.
- 3). Water young trees every 10 to 15 days during the spring and summer. Provide enough water to moisten the soil to a depth of at least 12 inches. Water trees three years or older once monthly when there is no natural rainfall.
- 4). Prune the tree in late winter before it begins actively growing again. Cut off any new branches forming along the trunk beneath the canopy. Cut back overly long branches that are drooping to the ground with a pruning saw.
