The Progressive, a monthly magazine of liberal thought, is published in Madison. Former governor and U.S. senator Robert “Fighting Bob” La Follette in 1909 established the publication as “a magazine of progress, social, intellectual, institutional.”

It consistently lambasts corporate greed and champions grassroots power.

The project began as La Follette’s Weekly, and the named changed to The Progressive 20 years later.

La Follette began public service as a Republican but later helped found the Progressive party.

Social justice, left-wing activism, conservation, politics, civil and human rights are common topics of coverage in The Progressive. Free speech and non-violence are priorities when editorial stances are taken.

Contributors include nationally known authors, syndicated commentators, conservationists and humorists.

Investigative reporting, cultural trends, interviews and editorials blanket this magazine of progressive thought.

The editor is Ruth Conniff, who also covers national politics. The publisher and senior editor is Matt Rothschild, whose work with The Progressive began in 1983. He hosts Progressive Radio, a weekly and syndicated show, and founded The Progressive Media Project, which delivers opinion pieces to media, especially newspapers.

The Progressive is a nonprofit publication that depends upon the donations of average people instead of paid advertisements for its survival.

Its e-books include the Hidden History Series: “Seneca Falls, Selma and Stonewall” and “Preserving Our Home on Earth: A Century of Environmental Writing from The Progressive.”

Rothschild’s books include “You Have No Rights: Stories of America in an Age of Repression” (2007, The New Press). He keeps an ongoing tally of civil liberty infringements through his McCarthyism Watch.
