Mon Calamari is a water planet on the Outer Rim. It is home to several sentient acquatic species, including the Mon Calamari and the Quarren. In the language of its native species, it is called Dac; it is also commonly known as Mon Calamari after its dominant race, or Calamari or Mon Cala for short.

Environment & Species

From space, Mon Calamari appears bluish-white due to its water-covered surface.

Its inhabitants live both underwater and in cities built on the surface of the water.

The two primary species are the fish-like, humanoid Mon Calamari and the humanoid, tentacled Quarren. Other intelligent species include Moappa, glowing jellyfish that share a group consciousness, and the Whaladons, whale-like mammals hunted as a delicacy by the Galactic Empire.

Early History

In 4,500 BBY, the Mon Calamari and the Quarren encountered each other for the first time, and war soon broke out between them. The more technologically advanced Mon Calamari defeated the Quarren, nearly wiping them out. The relationship between the species remained difficult.

Over the next few hundred years, the people of Dac became curious about the galaxy around them. They constructed the Mon Calamari shipyards and built spaceships to explore their system and neighboring planets. By the time Humans discovered Mon Calamari in 4,166 BBY, the native speices were already knowledgeable explorers. The planet eventually became part of the Republic.

Throughout Wars

During the Clone Wars, separatist leaders used the prior conflict between the Mon Calamari and the Quarren, and a civil war broke out. Jedi and Republic forces were called in to support the Mon Calamari, and the Quarren Isolation League was defeated. The peace agreement included dual representation in the Republic Senate from one Mon Calamari senator and one Quarren senator.

When the Galactic Empire rose to power, it took over the economically important Mon Calamari Shipyards an enslaved the planet's people. The people of Dac revolted, joining the Rebel Alliance and supplying them with battleships. One of the important Rebel officers during the Galactic Civil War, Admiral Ackbar, was a Mon Calamari. After the war, Mon Calamari became part of the New Republic.

Genocide

In 137 ABY, the One Sith released a biological agent intended to destroy all life on Mon Calamari. Their intention was to punish the Mon Calamari for helping the Galactic Alliance remnant; secondarily, attempting to evacuate survivors would put a huge strain on the Galactic Alliance's resources. In the end, about 20 percent of the planet's 27 billion inhabitants were saved, but Mon Calamari was made uninhabitable.
