The Box Drill For Quarterbacks
Place 4 cones in a line a total of 5 yards apart then 4 more cones approximately 1 yard behind the first row.
The object of this drill is to drop back the 5 or 7 steps, whichever drop back you would like to work on, so you want the first cone at the start and the 4th cone to be at the final step of your drop.
Set-HUT! At the start, simulate the center quarterback exchange and begin your drop back.
Hold the ball up with you elbow high.
Remember to work on you mechanics in every drill you ever do.
If you practice all of the drills you do with proper body positioning you will continue the proper mechanics on to the field on game day.
The Drop: Now the quarterback will continue through his 5 step drop.
This should place the quarterback just past the last cone.
Practice your pump fake.
Slide: Slide to the top of the other column of cones and again pump fake.
Step Up The Ladder: Practice your step up in the pocket by moving to the second cone in the row you are now in.
Slide Again: Now that you've stepped up in the pocket, slide again back to the original row of cones.
Repeat, Repeat, Repeat: Continue to step up and side all the way down your rows of cones until you get to the end.
This drill will train you to continue you to look down field as you drop back, slide and step up.
This is a quick, easy and fun drill that can be timed, but don't forget that it doesn't matter how fast you do it if you forget your mechanics.
It all translated to the field!
