What Causes Relationship Problems?

Relationship problems can ruin the happiness, intimacy and excitement of a couple and bring pain, stress and an aching heart. These problems start small and if they are not resolved soon, they blow up into something bigger. It is thus important to find ways to solve them as soon as possible to avoid future conflicts.

One of the problems in relationships, especially in a marriage, is money. A research states that 7 out of 10 couples declare money as a relationship strain. When financial problems sprout, it is best not to ignore them. Partners should set up a practical budget and save money in case of emergencies. Attitudes in spending and saving should be discussed as well as temporary and future financial goals. These goals should then be regularly checked so that progress would be monitored and discussed.

Communication should be constant in a relationship because lack of it can create problems. If couples have the vital listening skills, misunderstandings can be decreased. If one partner says something, the other should reflect on it and make sure he or she heard it correctly. They should set rules regarding anger and communication and avoid name-calling and shouting when they are arguing. When fights start to escalate, the couple must learn to calm down. They should avoid being sarcastic and saying ridiculing statements.

Relationship problems also sprout when there is no trust. There are couples who easily trust while there are those who need time to build trust. A couple who values their relationship should never betray the other because when trust is lost, it would be very difficult to earn again. For those who experience jealousy, they should rely on trust instead of what may happen.

One of the best things a couple should do is to give each other space from time to time. Just as time together is essential, time apart is too. It will give each of the partners the time to be an individual again and to have fun with their respective friends. Space gives the relationship a time to breath and would let each partner learn to miss and appreciate the other a whole lot more.

Partners do not always agree and see eye-to-eye thus they must learn the skill in handling inevitable conflicts. For this, they have to learn to respect the other so that they would handle conflict in a matured and responsible way. If respect is there, compromise easily follows. Respect makes the relationship healthy, thus both partners would learn to give and take. If they feel respected and supported, they learn to value the relationship and become satisfied with it.

Intimacy is an important ingredient in a relationship. The couple must be comfortable with the kind of intensity they have. If they do not have the same level, this may lead to many problems such as awkwardness, bitterness and worse, infidelity. Couples should therefore talk about intimacy in a comfortable manner whatever their situation may be.

Relationship problems would always be present but what is important is the couple's commitment to solve them for a better and stronger partnership.
