What should a man wear on a cruise

Over the last few years cruises have become more affordable and accessible. If you've chosen a cruise for your holiday this year you've made a fine choice. Cruising around, visiting different countries and experiencing many cultures is certainly a great draw to choosing a cruise but what should you wear on the formal nights?

As you probably know you won't be wearing heavy formal clothing during the day instead you should be wearing a pair of light cotton or linen trousers and a smart shirt or polo shirt. However when it comes to evening events you'll need to dress up. The evenings tend to be very stylish occasions where women wear ball gowns and the men dress in evening attire.

Many luxury cruise liners have dress codes and expect certain standards for formal evening wear, for example if you have chosen a cruise with P&O, Holland America etc expect to wear a tuxedo on their formal nights. Rather than try to guess what to wear use the following information to ensure you look the part on the big night.

If your cruise has a black tie theme to it then you can expect to wear a dinner suit aka tuxedo. Black tie basically means you'll be wearing a tuxedo comprising a single beasted black dinner jacket, dinner suit trousers, dress shirt and bow tie. You can also wear additional accessories such as a cummerbund and cufflinks. Thankfully the price of a dinner suit has plummeted so you wont need to 'splash out' (excuse the pun) in order to look great at the captains table or the dance floor.

For cruises to warm or tropical climates we would recommend a lightweight cream or white tuxedo jacket. You've probably seen them on one of the James Bond films. Just like a tuxedo suit they require a dress shirt and bow tie. The Dinner-suit editorial team have written an article on white dinner jackets and you can see some examples at Dinner-suit.co.uk.

Lastly if you make the effort it will show. It's always best to over-dress for an occasion. The question is do you really want to be the 'scruffy one' on the cruise?
